Substitutions
- Unsweetened Applesauce– Sub in sweetened applesauce or even a homemade recipe if you have a family favorite

How to make
- Gather ingredients and open jar and can
- In a bowl, combine all measured ingredients and stir
- Enjoy!
Tips and Tricks
- Adjust sugar to taste as prefer
- If using sweetened applesauce, use less sugar or no sugar
- Serve chilled by storing in refrigerator for about 1 hour prior to serving
- Baby food idea— eliminate or reduce spice and sugar. Store in pouch or container in fridge
- Craving warm applesauce? Warm bowl in microwave or stovetop (if you prefer) and stir frequently until warm throughout

What are other ways to spice up applesauce?
Applesauce is pretty easy to add some pizazz to so I definitely recommend finding many ways to enjoy it. I’ve seen everything from cayenne pepper to a splash of whiskey!
For today’s purposes, we’ll stick to family friendly ideas such as:
- Mix-ins or garnish— raisins, dried cranberries, sprinkles, nuts (don’t do this if feeding young kids or placing in reusable pouch)
- Mix with other fruit puree— pear pairs well with apple
- Top with whipped cream– this is our favorite for a simple dessert
Pumpkin Applesauce Pouch
I’m definitely not here to talk about canning and all that; however, I will recommend making your own reusable pouches so you can enjoy a healthy on the go- snack or in lunch boxes. Here’s what you need:
- Double Zipper Reusable Food Pouches ( I recommend variety pack for mommy and me portions)
- Spoon
How to make
- Follow directions for recipe
- Spoon into pouch, leaving space to seal (avoid overfilling)
- Wipe off if necessary and seal with pouch cap
- Store in refrigerator for up to 1 week (I place upright in bin with cap side down)
Is Pumpkin Spice Applesauce healthy?
This recipe is healthy– applesauce is a great substitute for a sweet snack. Mixing it with all the benefits of pumpkin, kicks this up a notch and delivers vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.
And this is a “pumpkin spice” dish that actually has pumpkin in it. Most things flavored pumpkin spice don’t actually have pumpkin in them…!
