Wake up and replenish your body with this easy green breakfast smoothie. Five simple ingredients and sensational nutrition. Also makes a yummy, cheerful snack for kids!
I’m excited to bring this recipe to you today. My son named this smoothie the “green dinosaur” when he was three. It’s a favorite for sure. And I’m happy the recipes has a permanent home on the blog.
While called a breakfast smoothie, it’s also one of our favorite afternoon snacks.
That’s the beauty of smoothies– they are so versatile!
Before we get to the recipe, let’s talk about what we are making today.
Green Smoothies
Smoothies are a great way to get in nutrition each day. And green smoothies are a popular type of smoothie!
So what is a green smoothie?
It’s just a name given to those smoothies made with fruit, liquid and leafy greens. The idea is that it has more nutrition and less sugar than all fruit smoothies.
Green Breakfast Smoothie Recipe
The recipe I’m sharing with you today is taking the idea of a green smoothie, tossing in some yogurt, and pouring in some orange juice (for a very important reason). Simple ingredients that my kids love and we always have on hand.
Best of all?
Green breakfast smoothie is so easy to make.
Why You’ll love this:
We love it because it tastes pretty close to the ‘Island Green’ from Tropical Cafe. But also because of the following:
- The fruits wake up your taste buds with natural sweetness.
- Easy Wellness Smoothie–Sure, you can throw your favorite supplement powder in, but it’s not required.
- Fast
- Zero clean up
- You won’t taste the spinach! Ideal for even for the pickiest eaters!
Ingredients
Skip the watered-down flavor from ice cubes with this one. Use frozen fruit and freeze your bananas and spinach and you’ll get an amazing creamy consistency. Here’s what you need:
- Frozen Fruit (tropical)
- Frozen banana
- Yogurt
- Spinach— Avoid picking the stems off fresh leaves and use my spinach hack!
- Orange juice
- Water— just a splash for some extra liquid to mix in with the thick, frozen fruits.
- Optional add-ins— major emphasis on optional here. I’ve included some suggestions below, but this is a good one to keep simple as-is.
How to make
This recipe makes one large smoothie or plenty for 2 smaller (child) size servings. Follow these easy steps:
- Add all ingredients to the blender cup or blender pitcher.
- Blend until creamy… and green!
- Pour in cup (or if you’re like me and use the magic bullet— screw on the drink spout) and enjoy!
Tips/Tricks for Best Green Smoothie
- I always add the liquid to my blender before the other ingredients.
- You may have to shake (or scrape side of blender) halfway through.
- Add a splash more of liquid (juice, water, etc) if needed (blender sizes vary).
- Serve with a spoon or pour into a bowl for a fun, green smoothie bowl
- Best if enjoyed immediately.
Substitutions/Add-ins
Here’s my suggestions for the best green smoothie swaps or add ins:
- Use any type of fruit you have– frozen strawberries, blueberries in place of tropical fruit
- Use kale, cucumber, or frozen peas or zucchini in place of spinach (or with!)
- You can use any milk/juice in place of OJ (however, read why you should use OJ below)
- Looking for more protein? Use Greek yogurt or add Chia seeds, flaxseeds, powder milk or protein powder to smoothie. You may need additional liquid.
Better Balanced Breakfast Tips
A lot of times I’m making this in the morning and serving it alongside sausage, oatmeal or eggs. Here’s some suggestions to serve it with:
Perhaps you’d like for this to be more of meal itself.
Simply add a nut butter or one of the protein suggestions listed above to keep you fuller even longer.
The Healthiest Green Smoothie
Why is this recipe the healthiest?
Because my kids will drink it.
And when it comes to improving your health, whatever good (or better) choice you can make for yourself is always the healthiest.
Sure, you’ll see other smoothies is fancier “wellness” ingredients, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.
Here’s the benefits you’re getting here:
- Greens— provides mood enhancing, immune boosting, cardiovascular and cancer protecting properties!
- Optimal Iron Absorbtion— here’s a little tip from a nurse: pair spinach with vitamin c when possible. Here, the orange juice actually helps your body absorb iron from the spinach that it wouldn’t on it’s own. How cool is that?!
- Easy to digest nutrition— because the greens and plant fibers are pulverized in the blender and broken down, they are easier to digest. This is great if you have digestive issues (IBS) and still want to get those fruits and veggies in. I speak from experience here as I lived on smoothies in 2015.
