Craving warm cinnamon apples? What about apple pie? Grab 3 ingredients from the pantry and create a fragrant, sweet cinnamon apple recipe on the stovetop that is sure to satisfy. Easy, versatile and a healthier option to fit any meal.
Cinnamon apples using canned apples
So if you’re not familiar with canned fried apples from Aldi, you’re missing out. Often compared to the fried apples at Cracker Barrel, I have to agree…they are pretty tasty.
However, there are some pros and cons.
Pros? Compared to canned pie filling, they aren’t as sweet. Nor do they have that strange glue-like texture.
Con? Because they are in more of a juice, my husband was not pleased.
His idea of cinnamon apples is a pan full of thick, cinnamon sugar-coated slices sautéed to a warm, bubbling consistency.
So, I took matters into my own hands.

Are these healthy?
These are healthy! Here’s why:
The protein pancake mix swirls together with the already sweetened apples to create a thicker, healthier option. There’s a ton of nutrients in the mix compared to cornstarch or flour.
And without the need for extra ingredients (butter, cups of sugar, etc.) or extra prep, this is a stress-free way to serve my family.
And if you’re looking for a crustless apple pie option, here it is. Enjoy a bowl of warm apple pie filling without:
- added fats
- shortening
- oils
Absolutely delicious!
Tips and Tricks
- Best enjoyed immediately
- Store leftovers in airtight container for 4-5 days
- Apple mixture will thicken as it sits, reheat on stovetop or in microwave, until warm and stir before serving
- Add apple pie spice for even more of apple pie taste
- Could probably use any pancake mix or all-purpose baking mix, too
