Makeover your childhood favorite! These “pigs” in a blanket that are now more filling and have more protein. Three ingredients. Minimal Prep. Perfect for a quick weeknight meal this week.
Traditional pigs in a blanket are a hit, aren’t they? Everyone knows what they are and likely has memories linked to them.
And who doesn’t love a food you can eat with your hands?
While this recipe feels a bit more mature (pigs in a blanket for adults, anyone?), I promise it’s just as fun.
We’re combining convenience with nutrition. And of course…
Everything Seasoning.
I guess you could call it a bagel dog
or crescent dog
or even get super technical with chicken apple sausage wrapped in a crescent roll blanket. Whew– now that’s a mouthful!
But as for me and my house, we’ll call it a pig in a blanket.
And we’ll make it just a bit healthier 🙂
Why you’ll love these
- Easy— Easy to find ingredients whether you’re at Target or Aldi and super easy prep. This is also a very affordable option.
- Versatile— Great for lunch or dinner but these are delicious for breakfast too! Oh, and you can customize how you want
- Family favorite— young or old, these are an absolute hit!
Ingredients
Basically, three steps and three ingredients–get the kids involved on this one!
- Chicken Sausage
- Crescent rolls
- Everything Seasoning
How to make
- Open can of crescent rolls (Do you still jump at the hiss pop too?!) and separate each triangle, lying flat on foiled covered (and lightly greased!) cookie sheet
- Roll one chicken sausage up in each crescent triangle starting from the wide end and rolling–you may need to slightly stretch dough as rolling
- Sprinkle with seasoning
- Bake at 375 degrees for approximately 15 minutes
Tips/Tricks
- Blot sausage with paper towel to ensure no liquid remains before rolling into dough
- Need Smaller bites? After cooled, cut up into round piece. Such an easy way for kids to eat and perfect “circles” for the bentgo lunch box
- Use any flavor of chicken sausage— there are some fun combinations out there with cheese, jalapeno, sun dried tomato, etc.
- Store leftovers in airtight container in fridge for 2-3 days.
- Reheat in microwave until warm or reheat in air fryer/oven
Overall, you can’t mess these up. Mine always turn out imperfectly imperfect and that’s part of the appeal. Especially when I have my two little buddies rolling along with me.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Are you hosting a football watch party? A playdate?
Perhaps you would like to have these rolled and ready to bake ahead of time!
You can.
Follow the recipe directions, but rather than baking, cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap.
When ready, simply remove plastic wrap and bake.
For best results, I don’t typically make them more than 2 hours in advance.
Can I freeze these?
If you’re thinking about freezing them, definitely bake them first. You can certainly reheat from frozen, but know that the roll up may be a bit soggier.
My opinion– this recipe is so easy that you can make on the whim with better results. Just reheat from fridge using the tips above!
What goes good with these?
For a balanced plate, you can serve these with:
- Salad/raw veggies
- Scrambled Eggs or Baked Egg Cups
- Everything Roasted Veggies
- Fruit Salad
- sweet potato chips– we love these from Aldi
And don’t forget the dipping sauce— mustard, ketchup, honey mustard are always good but I highly recommend my Fry Dipping Sauce for an even better dip.
Are these Healthy?
A meal that everyone loves and doesn’t stress mom out? The healthiest 😉
But let’s talk nutrition real quick.
Using chicken sausage in place of a hot dog also provides nearly 3 times the amount of protein (15 grams vs 5 grams).
You’ll also save on fat and have a bigger option that’s less in calories.
I don’t know about you but I LOVE a bigger bang for my buck. And that’s always a goal around here as we better serve our family and steward our bodies.
One last thing
