Dip into this irresistible, fail proof 2-ingredient Melted Dipping Chocolate! You’ll love this healthier, smooth way to fancy up fruit, nuts and treats just by using your microwave. Magic!
Dipping Chocolate
A good dipping chocolate recipe is a must for a momma to have on hand. You can instantly turn that at-home date night into a romantic fondue date or create endless treats with the kids in the kitchen.
Dipping chocolate can be hard to work with. Common questions may consist of:
- What kind of chocolate do I use?
- How long do I cook it for?
- Do I have to use a stove?
- Why is it clumpy?
If you suffer from any of these questions in the kitchen, here’s a great solution.
And one without fancy equipment like a candy thermometer or double boiler!
Two ingredient chocolate for dipping
This recipe takes the work and question out of melting chocolate. By the simple addition of coconut oil those plain ol’ chocolate chips from the pantry create a decadent (almost sinful!) dipping chocolate.
Grab a glass dish and spatula and get ready to microwave. National Chocolate Covered Anything Day may be over (Dec 16), but we’re celebrating everyday with this easy recipe!
Ingredients
- Chocolate chips (I prefer milk chocolate!)
- Coconut oil– I’m using packets from Trader Joes but any kind works
How to make
So easy! And definitely one kid-friendly without the use of the stove!
- Place chocolate chips and coconut oil in bowl
- Heat in microwave for approximately 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds
- Once melted, you’re ready to start dipping!
Can you melt any chocolate for dipping?
Typically, you can use various kinds of chocolate– chocolate chips, wafers, baking chocolate. The main thing to ensure is that your chocolate is in small, even sized pieces.
This recipe is best with chocolate chips– they are already in your pantry, small and consistent in size, and melt beautifully with the coconut oil.
Why do you add oil to chocolate for melting?
Adding oil, butter, or shortening helps the chocolate mix better with other ingredients. It can also help thin out the chocolate for a better melting, dipping and drying experience.
Coconut oil is ideal because it the fat source to help thin out but is still a thicker option than vegetable oil. Therefore, you create a chocolate that hardens more like a shell. This is important to know when you’re grabbing for your oils– vegetable oil is not the same! That will actually make chocolate softer and not dry as well.
I’m a huge fan of these convenient packets from Trader Joes. As someone who uses coconut oil infrequently to occasionally in the kitchen (typically in place of butter), these portioned packs are ideal.
Here, I’ll typically use half a packet (though you can use a full). If you’re not by a Trader Joe’s, you can order them here. If you want the exact measured portion for this recipe in a packet, consider this product
Tips and Tricks
- Stirs best with a non-stick spatula
- If chocolate starts to harden before using (I bet it won’t!), return to microwave and heat for another 30 seconds, giving a stir
- substitute any type of chocolate chip
- You can use up to 1 TBSP of coconut oil
- The coconut oil barely adds any flavor ๐
- For future recipe reference, the chocolate “sets,” or hardens best when refrigerated but this is a fantastic dipping chocolate right from bowl.
Is this healthy?
While everything is better dipped in chocolate, I guess I wouldn’t advise everything. Moderation is key. However, chocolate can be a fun way to treat yourself to fruit, nuts, cereals. Therefore, this chocolate can contribute to healthy dessert options!
Drizzling chocolate onto items is a great option to enjoy chocolate but less of it at the same time. And this spoons on very well thanks to that coconut oil that helps hold it together really well.
And spotlight on the coconut oil. Compared to butter, oil, shortening, it does stand out because of health benefits. Read here for 13 benefits of using coconut oil.

Cut down the recipe by a third, so I used 1/2 tsp coconut oil and 1/3 cup chocolate chips. I also don’t own a microwave so I placed the chocolate and oil in a pyrex measuring cup and placed in a pan of hot water on the stove. I stirred until it was creamy and had a great meal! ๐ Made chocolate covered banana with my younger sister, and my mother said the coconut oil made it taste delicious!
