After having kids, I started the weekly habit of cleaning the shower when I washed my hair. Not only is it a time saver, but honestly….it reduces stress. Which then increases joy.
Increases Joy? From having a clean shower? Yes! It might sound a bit crazy, but stick with me for a minute.
As moms we already have a long list of daily household duties such as:
- Wipe Counters
- Vacuum Crumbs
- Do Laundry
- Unload Dishes
Not to mention managing all those “oops I spilled” and muddy paw prints. It’s hard to keep up with! How do we possibly go one step further to do the less frequent but very necessary chores?
I’ve tried all sorts of methods– calendar with specific days, delegating to husband (ha), even hiring a housekeeper! But it’s never been a long-term solution. Routines change, life happens (aka kids would finger-paint on shower doors with a liter of soap). The soap scum would build up along with thoughts of “who’s turn is it?” and “I just can’t do it all.” Not healthy. Not joyful.
But I’ve found one trick that works. And it’s simple…
Pair a chore with another task.
So on the day I wash my hair, I also clean the shower.
I’m always going to wash my hair. Days may vary, but it’s ( eventually) non-negotiable. And this method is so easy, it’s hardly a chore. Making healthy habits like this are game changers to reducing stress in life. I feel more accomplished, less overwhelmed and just more joyful when the shower is glistening clean.
How do I wash my hair and clean my shower?
Just in that order!
- Take Shower
- Wash hair (condition too!)
- And before stepping out, clean shower.
What do I use to clean my shower?
I use Mr. Clean Magic Erasers for bath and showers. They are durable cleaning pads that scrub off (or erase) tough soap scum, grime, and residue.
No spray, no aerosol, no extra storage space needed. I actually keep one in the shower or on top of the shower doors. Plus, they work beautifully on our shower fixture which is primarily glass.
Just add water to the cleaning pad and squeeze to activate the built in cleaner.
There’s no need to rinse the surface after, although I do on the bottom of the shower where we stand. I also wear a glove when using the eraser just to avoid contact with the cleaner. These are both just personal preferences.
The scent is yummy– it leaves the bathroom smelling clean but not like harsh chemicals.
Why is it Important to Clean My Shower?
- A clean shower improves your health. Imagine mold buildup which can be harmful to breathe in, especially for those with breathing problems. And bacteria, viruses and pathogens can live on surfaces so it’s essential to wipe down bathroom surfaces at least once a week to avoid illness.
- You’ve tackled a task! Completing a task can then carry positive energy on to other tasks around the house throughout the day
- Less mess is less stress. I’ve found this to be true especially after having kids.
- It just looks better which makes you feel better
